Mack Brown, Maine Guide - Short Stories

Mack Brown is a Maine Guide who settled into a sporting lodge on a large Maine lake sometime in the early 1950s. In many ways he is a typical Maine guide, but in other ways his character exhibits knowlege, diversity, wisdom, talent and a love for the outdoors equaled by few. Mack is, however, a typical Maine native - short on words, long on wisdom and philosophy and with a reverence for the great north woods. Fly fishing is his passion and guiding is his life.

He cherishes bamboo rods, especially those made by the Thomas Rod Company of Bangor, is a master at tying flies and developed a particular friendship with the narrator. Mack relates his knowledge and experience, past and present, as the pair journey through the Maine woods in search of trout and of times past, and on the big lake in pursuit of landlocked salmon. Mack takes the young man to his most secret places, sharing the mystique and his knowledge. Always looking for the big fish, or the new experience, each place is unique and each fishing event an adventure with its own features.

Prologue from Silver Trout & Moonlight

I had asked Mack Brown if he ever knew Dud Dean, the famous guide that Arthur MacDougall wrote about.

“Dud Dean?  Why Dud was one of the most famous, most respected guides in the State of Maine.  There warn’t another guide around who
hadn’t heard of ol’ Dud Dean!”

I watched him fill his pipe as he continued.

“I run the Allagash with Dud once, and spent a summer on Moosehead Lake with him.  Man, he taught a lot of people a lot of things that summer.............................”

As he paused to light his pipe I sat down to listen to his stories. Typical of a Maine Yankee, he went from story to story, event to event, digressing at least twice between them.  He never stopped that afternoon until the dinner bell rang, and he came back to reality, and present day. I could see that he had just relived part of his past—those grand times he had spent with a guide whom he admired tremendously........................
